A registered Veterinary Surgical Specialist is a Veterinarian who has completed a Masters’ Degree focused on surgery. To complete this Degree the Veterinary Surgeon must gain clinical experience in the field of their chosen speciality - surgery, this is known as a residency.
The student must complete a research project which results in the publication of their dissertation and research article(s) in a scientific journal. They are also required to pass various Specialist Board examinations. The length of time that it takes to attain a specialist degree varies, but typically it takes 3-4 years. Once all the requirements are met the Veterinarian is then awarded a MMedVet Degree.
Specialists have vast experience in their field and have access to specialist equipment that might not be readily available in a General Veterinary Practice.
